Long story short...
biography
1key, a Multidisciplinary Artist, Poet & Actor
1key is an independent, multidisciplinary artist, poet, and actor who uses words, sounds, visuals, installation, and live theater as a laboratory for raw creative experimentation. Born into a life on the move, his work is profoundly shaped by a childhood spent crossing borders—a trajectory that gifted him with fluency in over six languages. As a multilingual lyricist, he primarily creates in Kinyarwanda, French, and English, weaving a sonic tapestry influenced by an eclectic mix of Rwandan traditional folk, Hip Hop, Congolese Rumba, Soul, and electronic textures.
Operating at the vanguard of contemporary art, 1key deliberately bridges organic performance with hyper-modern technology, openly collaborating with artificial intelligence to co-create experimental music production and build complex, fluid visual worlds.
This distinct, boundary-pushing creative footprint has earned him critical acclaim on international theater stages and global musical platforms alike. As an actor, he delivers a chilling, hyper-realistic performance as DJ Joseph in Swiss-German theater auteur Milo Rau's masterwork Hate Radio—a searing, globally toured production exploring media manipulation during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Reviewing its highly anticipated U.S. premiere at Brooklyn's St. Ann’s Warehouse, TheaterMania singled out his performance inside the glass-walled studio diorama, noting how he anchored the eerie rhythm of the room, "appearing permanently stoned and having a marvelous time" amidst the casual, creeping banality of the broadcast.
1key’s notable collaborative credits also include working alongside avant-garde icon Saul Williams on Neptune Frost—the celebrated Afro-futuristic sci-fi musical that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and landed on The New York Times’ Best Movies list. Additionally, he achieved a de facto Grammy nomination for his feature on three-time Grammy-winning poet J. Ivy’s critically acclaimed album, Catching Dreams. His intricate lyricism has drawn praise from contemporary masters like Gaël Faye, who has frequently highlighted 1key’s exceptional skill during his own European sets, including a notable impromptu performance in Toulouse, France.
Based in Rwanda but truly a citizen of the world, 1key regularly tours across Europe—with a strong production and partners and performance footprint in Germany, Switzerland and France. He remains a transient, evolving force in alternative art. Keep your eyes on the stage, because there is a high chance he will be unlocking a door near you soon.
